When I bought my Prius the finance guy offered me a pre-paid maintenance plan for $1,275 and the Toyota Platinum Extra Care plan for $1,375.
After briefly perusing the web I found that the Prius Chat forums offer a Discounted Toyota Extended Warranty plan through Warranty Shack. Don’t be fooled by the website’s shoddy looks. It is actually a side website offered by Troy Dietrich from Toyota of Greenfield, Massachusetts. It is the exact same plan as sold by my dealer, but for substantially less at $990. Many people in the priuschat forums and Yahoo! Prius owners group vouch for this discount so I figured I’ll give it a try to save myself some cash for the warranty and service work. I also called the dealership to confirm that Mr. Dietrich is in fact a real person (he is). I sent my check. Now we wait to see if I get ripped off.

I’m kinda in the same boat. I recently purchased a 2010 and paid 1600 for maintenance and 2000 for the upgraded warranty. Do you think this was a good thing to do?
You do not have to buy your maintenance and/or extended warranty from the dealer you bought your car, nor do you have to buy it at the time of purchase. You can buy both afterwards. I bought the maintenance plan and extended warranty for my Prius from Troy Dietrich at Toyota of Greenfield, Massachusetts. I found this dealer on the Internet in the priuschat forums.
As mentioned above I paid $990 for the service package which includes 12 scheduled maintenance visits. That makes the cost per visit $82.50. I think the average oil change at the dealership is $60 and then closer to $200 for the bigger maintenance intervals.
To date, my car has about 35,000 miles and I have taken the car in for service at each 5,000 mile service interval. I am thoroughly satisfied with the level of service and I do believe that, yes, I take the car in for service more regularly because I already paid for the service. Hopefully this extra attention to service means the car will last longer.
